Original field recordings were made on cylinders and discs between 1912-1944. They were duplicated at the Library of Congress in 1944-1945 on 16-inch discs for the Archive of Folk Song. The sound quality of some of these recordings is poor.

Abstract: Collection of field recordings of ballads, dance music, instrumentals, singing games, songs, and stories, recorded in various locations in North Carolina by Frank C. Brown circa 1912-1945, including items collected for the project after Brown's death in 1943. The collection includes eleven linear inches of catalogs, notes, lists, and correspondence. Among these are mimeographed typescripts of volumes of lists prepared for the published Frank C. Brown Collection of North Carolina Folklore; editors for these typescripts include Wayland D. Hand, George P. Wilson, Archer Taylor, B. J. Whiting, Paul G. Brewster, H. B. Belden, A. P. Hudson, and George Herzog. Included are lists of the names of the contributors; a bibliography; a checklist of the unpublished ballads and songs in the Frank C. Brown Collection compiled by Charles F. Bond; and correspondence between the Library of Congress and Newman I. White and to Charles F. Bond of Duke University regarding copying the field recordings at the Library of Congress 1944-1945; 1970.
