Collection title devised by Library staff. Illustration captions and citations to publications that reproduce the illustrations accompany most images and are noted in the item records. Works by some 500 artists are in the collection. Artists with more than 100 illustrations in the collection include: Charles Lewis Bartholomew, Clifford Kennedy Berryman, Oscar Cesare, George Yost Coffin, John C. Conacher, Miguel Covarrubias, Gib Crockett, Alfred Frueh, Oliver Harrington, Alfred Herbert Johnson, Walt Kelly, Rollin Kirby, Felix Mahony, Kazimierz J. Majewski, Bill Mauldin, and Edwin Marcus. Representative well known artists include: Herbert Block, Al Capp, Walt Disney Productions, Arthur Garfield Dove, Lyonel Feininger, Fudge, Rube Goldberg, Ardashair Muohaososios, G.B. Trudeau, and Gluyas Williams. Also includes some photomechanical prints, photographic prints, and prints.

Abstract: Contains original drawings and illustrations for political, editorial, and humorous cartoons published by international cartoonists in chiefly American newspapers, magazines, and books. Focus is on politics and government, international relations, with emphasis on United States relations with Russia and the Soviet Union, Great Britain, France, Spain, Germany, Mexico, Cuba, Japan, and Italy; domestic affairs, including African American and race relations; economic life, and historic events. Emphasis placed on military issues surrounding the World Wars, the Korean War, and the war in Vietnam. Extensive use of animals such as the Democratic donkey and the Republican elephant and fictitious characters including Uncle Sam, John Bull, Dame Democracy, and John Q. Public as symbols of current events. Portrays major political figures of the late 19th and 20th centuries, especially American presidents, as well as international leaders including Adolf Hitler, Nikita Krushchev, Benito Mussolini, and Josef Stalin. Also portrays domestic life and popular culture.
